This information sheet is intended to answer some common questions that people have regarding the continuing education program and the College. We’re glad that you have found a course in our offerings that may be valuable to you, and we hope the course you’ve chosen will be both exciting and educational.

ABOUT VANDERCOOK: Established in 1909, VanderCook College of Music is the only independent college in the country dedicated exclusively to educating music teachers. We are fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the National Association of Schools of Music, and the Illinois State Board of Education. VanderCook’s degree programs include the Bachelor of Music Education, Master of Music Education, and Master of Music Education and Certification programs. Credit for this course is being offered as part of VanderCook’s Music Education Centers of America (MECA) Continuing Education program, designed to enhance the skills of music educators already in the field.

CREDIT: To be eligible to receive graduate level credit for “Conn-Selmer Institute,” a student must have a degree in a music-related discipline. Any exceptions must be approved directly by VanderCook College of Music. To earn credit, a student must: 1) attend the complete schedule of activities, and 2) complete a notebook documenting the activities attended (see below).

NOTEBOOK: The notebook should consist of a three ring binder with tabbed dividers as appropriate for the material. The notebook must have a title page stating course number and title, the student’s name and the term (Summer 2008), as well as a table of contents. All information must be typed and neatly formatted in a manner befitting graduate credit – no handwritten work will be accepted. Full sentences and correct grammar and spelling are required. The notebook should explain what was presented, and include the student’s thoughts on the material and ideas for practical application.

All handouts and supporting materials must be included. Mail notebooks to Ruth Rhodes, Dean of Graduate Studies, VanderCook College of Music, 3140 S. Federal St., Chicago, IL 60616, for evaluation. Your notebook will be returned when grade reports are mailed. The notebook is due June 25, 2008 – two weeks from the end of Conn-Selmer Institute.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Due to the necessarily strict policies of VanderCook’s accreditors, absence from any required part of the course will result in a grade of “F.” Attendance will be taken twice each day; VanderCook College of Music reserves the right to deny credit to anyone whose signature does not appear on the correct sheets.

GRADE SHEETS: Each student will be sent a grade sheet to his or her home address upon successful completion of the course.

TRANSCRIPTS: VanderCook College of Music issues only official transcripts. To receive an official transcript of your coursework, you must make a request in writing. You may either 1) complete a transcript request form (available from the college or at the course site), or 2) put in writing your name, social security number, and the address to which you want your transcript sent, and sign and date the letter. There is a $5 fee for each transcript requested; payment must accompany the request.
